How to become a millionaire by the age of 25

How to become a millionaire by the age of 25How to become a millionaire by the age of 25The subtitle of my book, MILLENNIAL MILLIONAIRE A Guide to Become a Millionaire by 30, generated a lot of buzz on how to make quick money. While this was a totally unintended consequence of a cute tagline, there is nothing wrong with young ambition. For full disclosure, I personally am a Certified Financial Planner committed to long-term wealth accumulation, achieved by patience and adherence to a sound set of strategies. So, how do you become a millionaire not just by 30, but by 25? Heres my advice. Reader beware, this may serve as a cautionary tale.Lets first examine the facts and then see whats feasible. Most college graduates today are finishing their bachelors degree at 22 years old, give or take a year. The average starting salary for the graduating class of 2018 is $50,390.1 So, if we take the average income and subtract taxes (well just use 20% effective tax rate for simplicity) that leav es $40,312 of take-home pay. Notwithstanding all the usual expenses for a young professional (i.e. student loan repayments, car payments, cell phone bill, hitting the bar, etc.), even if the average graduate was able to bank all of this money for the next 3 years leading up to his or her 25th birthday, that would total $120,939 of savings. Still a far cry from $1 million buckaroos.Consequently, why even title this article How to Become a Millionaire by 25, or entertain the idea? We already know that the average income wont get you there. One cannot realistically invest their $120k of accumulated savings into $1 million within threeyears unless theyre literally gambling and coming up a winner almost every time.Rather than buying lottery tickets every week and crossing your fingers, you must first realize that extremely high income and/or access to assets is a prerequisite. What are the highest paying jobs in America today? Anesthesiologists top the list with a mean income of $269,600 followed by Surgeons, OBGYNs, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and Orthodontists.2 As you can see, the medical space dominates this realm. Considering any of these occupations requires an additional 4 years of Medical School beyond undergrad, followed by three to seven years of residency and fellowship training, these folks dont rake in the dough until after 30. The first job on the list that is not in the medical space is a Petroleum Engineer coming in at 12 with a mean income of $147,030.That pretty much eliminates the traditional income track. However, there are millionaires under the age of 25. Without further ado, heres how theyre doing it Start a business. Per above, the normal route wont cut it. Even a high-paying sales wont ramp up fast enough.Start said business super early, not at age 21 after 4 years of frat parties. Most millionaires under 25 started a business in college or even in high school.Discover the repeatable. Its ok if your business makes only $1 per transacti on, as long as 1 million people want to buy it.Think tech. The bulk of todays young mega rich are taking their idea on the web to an international audience and selling out to large companies (i.e. Instagram to Facebook for $1 billion in 2012.)Network. A great idea is just that, an idea. It takes a network of professionals to make it a reality. As you can see by now, there is no easy route into this elite club. Investment strategies are disconnected to such a lofty goal. Unless youre an incredibly talented athlete signing a sick pro contract, or so good looking that Hollywood caught your profile picture, the odds are not in your favor. Consider the strategies above on your quest towards a $1 million, and if blowing out 25 candles comes and goes, dont be deterred as youre certainly not alone. There is one belastung way to reach this objective though, go make your money the old fashion way, inherit itBryan M. Assistant Vice President Definition

Assistant Vice President DefinitionAssistant Vice President DefinitionIf youve worked your way up the corporate ladder and youve achieved the position of assistant vice president or youre about to, youre getting near the top. Assistant vice president is typically one rung below vice president in much of thefinancial services industry. Its a relatively common role within a firm, particularly for those in brokerage, securities, and investment banking. Skills, Qualifications, and Education Most large firms expect an assistant vice president to have earned an MBA in finance and have five years or more of hands-on work experience. A bachelors degree in any field may be acceptable to get in on the ground floor so you can work your way up and achieve some at least seven years experience. Experience can be even more important than the exact nature of your education and your degree, particularly with smaller companies. In addition to the keen understanding of various areas of finance that your education and experience offer, you should be able to meet deadlines and perform well under pressure. Youll also need people skills. Even if you dont deal directly with clients, youll be expected to interact effectively with staff and other members of the management team. Superior communication skills are essential, including both oral and written. Duties and Responsibilities The AVP role in some organizations is a senior management position. Assistant vice presidents may or may not supervise other employees, although they may be responsible for mentoring and guiding new hires. AVPs may serve as a team leader in project management or, depending on the nature of the firm, may work directly with clients. An AVP might be expected to manage analysis and oversight of investments on behalf of the firm. The assistant vice president typically reports to the vice president and other senior members of the company. Salary Ranges The average salary of an assistant vice president is about $95,000 nationally as of 2018. The pay scale ranges from about $50,000 to close to $130,000. Just as in other sectors and other areas of business, location plays a big part- firms in major metropolitan areas and situated in financial hubs tend to pay more than those in outlying regions. The size and revenues of the financial firm invariably affect employee compensation. For example, a large bank may have numerous AVPs and VPs throughout the organization so that the pay scale can vary depending on their role and responsibilities. However, in a small firm, an AVP title may carry more weight. Raises can be generous, which of course, is commensurate with performance and also depends on location and the firms revenues. Profit-sharing, bonuses, and commissions may also be paid depending on the nature of the firm. Job Availability and Advancement Many financial firms fill top slots from within as they become available due to senior partners or staff retiring or moving on to othe r pursuits. The next rung on the corporate ladder from assistant vice president is typically vice president, and its common for the assistant vice president to move up to this role when a job opens up or if the firm grows and expands. Of course, the move up results in more responsibility but corresponds with an increased salary. Alternate terms AVP, Assistant VP

Surprise! How to Handle an Unexpected Job Offer

Surprise How to Handle an Unexpected Job OfferSurprise How to Handle an Unexpected Job OfferMany people think that holding onto a good job in this economy is an accomplishment. So getting a job offer when you werent even looking? Thats a small miracleWell, its actually not- the further you progredienz in your career, the more people you meet and the more marketable you become to other companies. So, whether you get a call from a headhunter on LinkedIn or an offer from your old boss to work at her new company, its completely possible that a new job opportunity could fall in your lap unexpectedly.A surprise offer means you need to do some serious thinking- and fast. And no matter how excited you are about the prospect or how little time you have to make a decision, the new offer shouldnt be taken lightly. If you find yourself in this boat, heres a run-down of what to consider before going any further. How Long Have You Been at Your Current Job?Even though the expectation of staying in a job for seven years is now completely pass (seriously- who came up with that rule?), tenure absolutely still matters. Depending on how long youve been in your current position, and how frequently youve moved around in your field, it might be wise to forego a new opportunity if you need to build more experience in your current role. How Happy Are You?Take some time to reflect on how you felt about your current jobbeforethe new offer came along. Are you generally happy? Are you challenged and learning new things? Or are you getting ready for a change in a few months anyway? Also think about how the new job relates to your overall career plans. Is it really a good fit, or are you just tempted by the thought of something new? Think about how youll feel about the new opportunity a year from now- once the excitement wears off. What Perks Will You Gain or Give Up?Think about the perks of each gig- not just health insurance and vacation days, but the things that make your life a whole lot eas ier. For example, are you permitted to telecommute at your current job? Would the new office have features like day care or a cafeteria? These are the types of things we tend to forget about when were weighing possibilities- but theyre important factors in your overall happiness, and should be considered along with the salary and job description. Will the New Job be Stable? The job market is recovering, but its far from stable. Receiving a new job offer is an encouraging sign of a companys performance, but look into resources like their annual report and recent press releases to get a better idea of how secure your new job would be. Also, remember that it takes time to build yourself up in a new position. If youve been in your current job for a while, its easy to look past the challenges you faced during your first months of making a name for yourself. Is This Really the Right Time and distributions-mix?While being pursued is nice, its not a reason to accept a job offer if its not the right one for you. Think things through as carefully as possible, and make sure youre making a move becauseyouwant to- not because someone else wants you.Im also a big believer in trusting your instincts- if an opportunity feels right from all angles, it probably is. And while the new company may not give you a whole lot of time to make a decision, you will have opportunities to ask questions throughout the process. If you decide that the grass on the other side of the corporate ladder isnt really greener, its completely fine to turn the offer down. After all, there might be another one just around the corner.Which means- be prepared Of course, you never know when a surprise offer might come your way, but there are some things you can do on a regular basis to set yourself up for success if youdowant the job. Always keep your resume up-to-date, know who your references are, and have at least an idea of what types of positions youd be open to next.Check out more from Job Search Month at The Daily MusePhoto courtesy of Joi Ito.

How to write a powerful LinkedIn summary

How to write a powerful LinkedIn summary How to write a powerful LinkedIn summary The most important part of your LinkedIn profile may be the headline (learn more here) but a very close second is the summary section. This is the first thing people see when they click through to your page and its vital that it makes a stellar first impression on recruiters and hiring managers.Ive been writing profiles for clients since LinkedIn first launched and along the way Ive learned a few key pointers for making them work. Here are four of my best tips for creating a summary that really grabs attention. Write in the first personMany people write their LinkedIn summary in the third person, meaning they write about themselves as if they were someone else. For exampleLouise Fletcher is a former HR executive, professional resume writer and President of Blue Sky Resumes. Prior to starting her business, Louise I suppose they do this because we have seen professional bios written this way and it soun ds like the way were supposed to write. But this type of bio doesnt work well on LinkedIn for a few reasons.First, communication on the web has always been more informal than print communication. Second, everyone reading your LinkedIn profile knows you wrote it yourself (unlike a professional bio which is generally written for you by someone at your company). Therefore, it looks a little odd to write about yourself in the third person. Lastly, third-person summaries put a wall between you and the reader at the very time you want to make a connection. So instead of thisLouise Fletcher is a former HR executive, professional resume writer and President of Blue Sky Resumes. Prior to starting her business, Louise My bio should readIm a former HR executive, professional resume writer and President of Blue Sky Resumes. Prior to starting my business, I (For quick and easy LinkedIn summary templates to follow, click here.)Communicate some of your work style and personalityIts important to te ll people a little bit about the way you work. First, it helps communicate your strengths, and second, it injects a little bit of personality into your profile. As an additional benefit, describing how you work can be a turn-off to employers where you wouldnt fit - and this saves you from wasting time on interviews with companies you wouldnt choose to work for. So, for example, you might say, I do my best work when Im challenged and then left to figure out the solution on my own or colleagues describe my leadership style as high-energy and entrepreneurial. If there is a new and better way to do something, Ill find it.Include results in your LinkedIn summary Many people think they should save results for the job description section of the profile, but its very effective to include them in your summary because some recruiters wont read your whole profile. I like to think of the LinkedIn summary as a mini resume basically a snapshot of your key selling points and past results are one of your most effective selling points. If you dont want your current employer to know youre looking for a new job, you may elend want to sound overly self-promotional in your summary. But this is easy to avoid. Simply phrase your results as a team effort (since joining XYZ, my team has increased sales by 12% or I am proud to have contributed to increasing productivity 5% over the prior year) or soften the impact (by saying something like I am thrilled to have been given the chance to improve system reliability by 25% in the first year.)However you do it, choosing a few select results to emphasize will really strengthen the impact of your summary.Express passion for your current/belastung jobAll recruiters and employers want to hire people who are enthusiastic about their work. Even if you hate your job and your boss, you must not show it Instead, describe the things you like about your current position (or, youre unemployed, describe the things you enjoyed about your last job). You might worry that if you sound happy recruiters wont contact you, but this is not true. In fact, theyll be more likely to get in touch because they love to poach good employees away from other companies. In summary Following these four guidelines will ensure that your LinkedIn summary attracts the attention you deserve, and makes a strong impression on anyone reading it. Mental decline linked to pro-longed unemployment

Mental decline linked to pro-longed unemployment Mental decline linked to pro-longed unemployment “Don’t be married to the job, be engrossed in the work,” Atlantic correspondent,  Ellen Ruppel Shell wrote recently in reference to the malaise of job dissatisfaction affecting many young Americans. Shell is of the persuasion that this particular mental sickness  owes a great deal of its wrath to a misunderstanding of what good work actually means. Many supplant personal worth with professional  achievement-a provisional, clandestine beast, that sees many unfortunate post-graduates chasing ghosts indefinitely.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!New findings published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, portends several reasons to validate Shell’s concerns; for some, the notion that they’re producing “good work” is the only thing keeping them from sharp mental decline. One of the researchers involved in the recent study, Andrea Zechmanne expounds with the following: “Often, employment is reduced to the obvious - such as that it provides an income, gives us a sense of security, or we talk about employment with a negative connotation (it’s too much, too stressful, the colleagues aren’t nice), but we forget that work, in general, is something that helps us to stay psychologically healthy.”How unemployment plagues self-worthThe report began with an analysis of more than 1,000 individuals  that were either unemployed or expected to be unemployed sometime in the near future. For two and a half years, these subjects were asked to complete questionnaires regarding their wellbeing. The respondents that found work in this two  and half year span reported fewer instances of psychological duress.  In addition to the anxieties that correlate with states of financial poverty (which the study also made a point to make note of), more abstract factors contributed to mental decline; things like a loss of a sense of purpose being signifi cant amongst them.“Employment does not only provide us with an income (the so-called manifest function of employment) but it enables access to psychological experiences that help to satisfy important psychological needs,”  Zechmanne commented to Psypost. The study’s authors hastened to clarify that “employment” should not be viewed as a salve for mental illness whether it’s basis  circumstantial or otherwise. The researchers merely sought to identify why the two shared such a notable  cause and effect relationship. While it’s true that many of the studied participants that found work during the study period expressed improvements  to day to day disposition, some went on to find jobs that caused them a different character of mental unrest. Zechman concludes,  Ã¢€œThere are many bad jobs that thwart our mental health and researchers must also continue to identify what makes people ill in the world of work.”You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

New ECLIPSE Interns Start Their Terms

New ECLIPSE Interns Start Their Terms New ECLIPSE Interns Start Their Terms New ECLIPSE Interns Start Their Terms May 26, 2017 Eight early career members of ASME have been selected to participate as the 2017-2018 class of the Societys Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE) program, in which young members of the Society learn about the inner workings of ASME by serving with an ASME unit such as the Board of Governors, the Volunteer Orientation and Leadership Training (VOLT) Academy, or one of the ASME Sectors. The eight new interns will begin their yearlong terms next month at the ASME Annual Meeting in Newport Beach, Calif. Ebele Ejiofor Once accepted to the program, ECLIPSE interns are matched with a dedicated advisor within their area of interest at ASME. During their internships, they will have the opportunity to travel to Society meetings and take part in workshops and training sessions to build leadership skills, which will serve them in both their careers and their personal lives. If you want to get good sleep, dogs are the best bedmate

If you want to get good sleep, dogs are the best bedmate If you want to get good sleep, dogs are the best bedmate Humans. They’re the worst right? Not really, but when it comes to sleeping they really aren’t the greatest.Who decided we were supposed to have someone in our bed anyway? The cavemen had to do it to stay warm obviously and fend off wolves, but that’s not really an issue anymore (unless you are on a camping trip gone horribly awry.) But maybe Rob and Laura Petrie had it right on The Dick Van Dyke Show. Perhaps twin beds are just the way to go.If you’re anything like me, sharing a bed with someone is a constant battle for territory, blanket coverage, pillows and sometimes just a basic sense of self. But there is one bedmate that has never disappointed me. He takes up hardly any room and yet still makes me feel safe and adds a little warmth on a cold night. He has terrible breath but if you can look past that, it’s just fine. That companion would be my dog. And apparently, I am not alone in this preference.A new study from researchers at  Canisius College found that some women actually sleep better next to dogs than other humans. They interviewed 962 women in the U.S. and found that 55% of their sample shared the bed with at least one dog, 31% with a cat and 57% with a human being.Interestingly dog owners also had earlier bedtimes and wake times than individuals who had cats but no dogs. A study recently found that children that grow up with dogs have a higher chance of being a CEO or COO.Dogs for the winHumans were found to be very disruptive sleep mates as were cats. But those wonderful canines were less likely to cause disruptions. Like a dog is never going to steal your covers in the middle of the night and then insist that you threw them on him the next morning because you got hot in the middle of the night forcing you to question your sanity and basil temperature. Now, I do sometimes worry about crushing my dog or accidentally pushing him off the bed because he is only 11 pounds but he is pretty aware of where to sleep in the bed so we’ve never ha d a problem. There is no research to support this, but dogs are also the best dining partners as they never judge you for having another glass of wine and are absolutely fascinated every time you take a bite.

How to Put in Two Weeks Notice - The Muse

How to Put in Two Weeks Notice - The Muse How to Put in Two Weeks Notice It’s bittersweet to leave a job. You’re excited about the new faces, projects, and energy your new role and company will bring but also sad to leave behind the teams you work with day in and day out. Some colleagues you’ve become close friends with, others have impacted you in ways they aren’t even aware of. You have mentors, managers, teammates, almost teammates, and lunch buddies to say goodbye to. How do you even begin to say goodbye? And when? Last week, I started telling my boss, teammates, and colleagues that our time together was coming to an end. This week is my last at LinkedIn, and I’m grateful to everyone who has made my experience here so memorable. Before I go, I’ll share a final lesson: Here’s what I’ve learned about the art of giving notice this week. 1. Prepare What You Will Say Though you don’t need to memorize your departure speech word by word, you should be sure to hit on a few core parts when you give formal two weeks notice: Explain that you have received an offer from another company and have accepted. Express gratitude for the opportunities given to you to date. State when your final day at work will be. Offer help for the transition process (more on that in step 4). Extra pointers: Be swift but courteous. Contrary to alternate advice, I do not think you should cut out all niceties and small talk. (That’s like leading with a punch to the gut!) Be human and engage in authentic small talk, but don’t beat around the bush either. When it’s time, deliver your news. Know in advance whether you will consider a counter offer, as you very well may get one. 2. Tell People in the Right Order Your boss should be the first to hear the news, and you should tell her in person. Depending on your experience, you may want to tell your mentor next, your working teams and stakeholders after that, and lastly, anyone else you’ve worked with in the past you’d like to keep in touch with. Make a list of any dependencies that might impact that order, too: Is there a meeting you will need to announce your departure before? Meetings you should really no longer sit in on? This will help you safely prioritize who to give notice to when, and how. (Err on the side of giving notice in person whenever possible- followed by phone, and email as a last resort.) Before you say anything, though... 3. Make Sure Your Game Plan for Announcing Your Departure Is Vetted by Your Boss Your boss may have to backfill your role and do some internal shifting to keep things afloat while she looks for a new hire. If your boss asks for a few days to come up with a transition plan before announcing your departure to working teams, sit tight. If there are key figures your boss would like to update first, honor that. Help your boss out by sitting on the news while plans for what happens once you’re gone come together. 4. Help With Transition Planning Offer to wrap up loose ties, and help document as much as you can to pass on to your replacement. This is the spring-cleaning phase of your exit: Organize your projects and list out points of contact, open action items, and potential next steps. Your goal is to leave your work at a stage where someone else can easily jump in and pick up the thread. Think of it like prepping your apartment for Airbnb visitors: You don’t know who will stay next in your apartment, but it needs to be tidy. You’ll also want to make it really easy for them to find the nearest grocery store, bank, and your version of the major sights. 5. Expect People to React Differently Some colleagues will positively beam and shout “Congratulations!” with glee when they hear your news. Others will bemoan your decision and cry out, “Oh no!” before adding a less hearty congrats. Still others will want every detail- “How long have you been thinking about leaving? What didn’t you like about your team/role/company?” Some may try to convince you to stay- your boss may even counter your notice with an offer! Prepare for every reaction, and do your best to take it all in stride. It’s up to you how much you want to divulge about your next job, but say thank you and express gratitude no matter what. 6. When it Comes to Giving Feedback, Save it for the Exit Interview Losing good talent is painful for employers, so they will inevitably want to know more about why you’re leaving. Your boss may ask specifics: Did you not have enough resources? Were your projects not compelling? Was management effective? Was it something else entirely? Consider what feedback you can provide for the benefit of the company, then reserve it for your boss or your HR department. If a fellow teammate complains or seems to be prodding you to gossip about the company, zip up. Save constructive criticism for the exit interview, and leave on a good note. No sour apples in the crowd! 7. Say Thank You You have earned your new job by virtue of the work you have done over the course of your career, including your most recent work at the company you are now leaving behind. There are undoubtedly people who have inspired you, challenged you, and collaborated with you in your current role. Thank them: for their time, their generosity, their mentorship, their good spirit. Trust that someday soon you’ll find a way to return the favor. 8. Keep in Touch Whether that’s on LinkedIn (a final plug before I go!), email, or other social networks, give now-former colleagues a way to keep in touch. Keep your relationships alive by checking in from time to time and offering advice, skills, relevant articles, or mentorship when the time is right. Your network really is the gift that keeps on giving- where possible, make sure you spend time giving back, too. 9. Save Time for Self-reflection Changing jobs is a truly momentous thing. No matter how smoothly your transition goes, it’s bound to bring some stress along with it. This is perfectly normal. In the midst of goodbyes and see-you-soons, take a beat to reflect on all you have achieved in your current role, and everything you’re excited for next. Write down your accomplishments, gather any key work samples you’re proud of (company policy permitting), and breathe. It’s all part of the process. You are exactly where you’re meant to be. 10. Lastly, Say Yes to Cake Never be too shy to turn down an excuse to celebrate you. If your team plans a farewell gathering for you, say yes and smile big! Now is the time to reflect on your achievements, celebrate your time and impact at the company, and remember the lessons you learned there and how you will build upon them moving forward. A little bit of cake and champagne to celebrate all the hard work you’ve given to your current company, and all the exciting things yet to come at the new one? Cheers to that. One Last Thing No matter how thoughtful your approach in giving notice, remember that no method is foolproof. Know that word may get out before you want it to, that some people will get left out of announcements or miss a meeting and end up hearing the news from someone else. You can’t control everything. Know that you did your best because you cared, and you tried. Congratulations, job changer. Good luck! This article was originally published on LinkedIn. Photo of calendar courtesy of Shutterstock.

6 ways to stay calm during an overly crowded commute

6 ways to stay calm during an overly crowded commute 6 ways to stay calm during an overly crowded commute Have you ever spent a longer-than-usual train ride without a seat, pressed against other commuters on all sides, and clenching a railing for so long that you started to lose feeling in your fingers?Maybe it hasn’t played out exactly like this for you, but  I already know that almost all of you have at some point been stuck without a seat for a long time.I have too - in fact, you just read the exact details of what happened during my commute this morning, all because of a huge delay. Here’s how to stay calm the next time you’re stuck in a tight space  on your way to or from work.Put your backpack on the floorDon’t go through the whole experience with your backpack or bag on â€"  it’ll only be more crowded and uncomfortable for you. Chances are, you might even get a few dirty looks from other commuters. So put your bag on the floor and give your shoulders and back a rest, even if you can’t sit down. Your body will thank you later.Make sure you have an external charger and a snack handyThese things can literally make or break you at a time like this. You won’t always have service, but having access to more battery life can be a lifesaver the next time you do. Extra power could also prove essential for calling for help if you get stranded somewhere, or need to communicate to your manager that you’ll be late coming into work.Water and a snack can also help you keep your energy up. After all, you never know how long a train delay will last.Give yourself a break - get off the trainEven the least claustrophobic person could find it challenging to keep their head above water on the slowest, most uncomfortable commute ever.Sometimes, you just have to get off the train. So give yourself a break and exit at the next stop. Either change cars completely for a change of pace, or take a breather on the platform and wait for a less packed train to eventually roll into the station.Celebrate all the little winsIn this situation, every stop equals real progress, so give yourself something to look forward to.Appreciate every moment the train inches forward to your destination - and that you’re not stopped on the train tracks because of a delay - or when someone pressed against you unexpectedly gets off at a stop.Eventually, you’ll get to where you’re going.Use mindfulness techniquesThe practice of mindfulness can really help you on a horrible commute â€" do things like looking around without passing judgment, paying attention to what’s going on around you and using social media the right way.Not familiar with this method? Practice mindfulness in your everyday life, and you might just have an easier time with it during a long delay.Close your eyesThis could be a big plus! I tried this today and it helped me stop focusing on all the people around me, and tune into the movement of the train.Just be sure that you’re holding onto a railing in case there’s an unexpected lurch forward.
